2 Semi Fires Within 20 Minutes On I-94 In Wis.
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The State Patrol in Wisconsin said two semi trucks started on fire within 20 minutes of each other Tuesday on Interstate 94.
Troopers said around 7:48 p.m. they got a call of a truck on fire in the eastbound lanes I-94 near Hudson, Wis. Two of the three eastbound lanes had to be closed for about an hour while crews put out the flames.
Shortly after, a second fire started near Eau Claire, Wis. at mile post 60.
Traffic heading east was rerouted at Exit 59 because the smoke was so thick. One lane was reopened after about 20 minutes and both lanes opened just before 10 p.m.
Troopers said there was a report of a mattress on the road in the second fire. Before they could clear it, however, the semi ran it over and the springs became wedged under the truck.
The Wisconsin State Patrol said sparks from the springs caused the vehicle to start on fire.
Both trucks were hauling food, so no hazardous material was burned.
The state patrol continues to investigate.
