WILSON, Wis. — Two people were killed and six others injured in a crash involving seven vehicles in western Wisconsin Monday evening, authorities said.

The crash happened around 5:40 p.m. on Interstate 94 westbound near Wilson, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Traffic on the highway was slowed due to construction. A driver in a semi "failed to identify the slowed traffic" and crashed into a Ford F-150 and another semi, the patrol said. Four more vehicles were struck during a chain reaction and multiple vehicles caught fire.

The semi driver who caused the crash, identified as Zdzislaw Obodzinski, 76, of Palatine, Illinois, and the driver of the F-150, James Shearer, 45, of Hammond, Wisconsin, were both killed, according to state patrol.

The six injured people have been treated and released.
