1913 Replica Biplane Crash-Lands In Duluth Harbor, No One Hurt
DULUTH, Minn. (WCCO) -- No one was hurt after a 1913 replica biplane crashed-landed in the Duluth-Superior Harbor near Skyharbor Airport late Tuesday morning, according to authorities.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said the Lark of Duluth, a 1913 flying boat-type aircraft, crashed into the water after a brief flight around 11:35 a.m. Tuesday. Mark Andrew Marino, of Duluth, piloted the plane and was its sole occupant. He wasn't injured after the "hard landing," and a chase boat that had been assisting with the flight was on hand to transport Marino and tow the aircraft back to Skyharbor.
The aircraft appears to have sustained substantial damage, and the Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating on Wednesday.
The plane's fuel system was not compromised and there was no fuel leaked into the harbor. The plan is owned by the Duluth Aviation Institute.
