18-Year-Old Sentenced In Crash That Killed 2 Burnsville Teens
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- An 18-year-old Burnsville man has been sentenced in a crash that killed two Burnsville teens and injured two others on Aug. 21, 2012, the Dakota Count Attorney's Office announced Monday.
The 18-year-old driver, who is not named because the case is in juvenile court, was sentenced to serve 60 days in the Juvenile Service Center and 100 hours of community work service.
The driver previously pled guilty to two felony counts of criminal vehicular homicide, one felony count of criminal vehicular operation and one gross misdemeanor count of criminal vehicular operation.
Frederick Jeffrey Alexander, 16, and Alesha Katherine Roehl, 17, both of Burnsville, were killed in the crash. A 16-year-old Lakeville boy and a 17-year-old Burnsville boy were injured.
The driver drove in a grossly negligent manner leading up to the crash, which happened at about 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 21, 2012, on Buck Hill Road.
The Minnesota State Patrol determined after reconstructing the accident that the driver was traveling about 96 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone when the vehicle lost control, spun 180 degrees, hit a curb and rolled six or seven times down a hill and landing on the southbound lanes of I-35.
Alexander was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Roehl was also ejected from the vehicle and airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she died that night. Three other passengers in the back of the car who were not wearing seat belts were ejected from the car. The driver and another passenger in the front of the car were wearing seat belts.
That passenger told the driver to slow down before the crash happened, according to court documents.
The judge also ordered the driver to serve an additional 10 days in jail on the anniversary of the deaths in 2014 and 2015.
