10 Years After Hit-And-Run, Maple Grove Man Wants Answers
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's been 10 years of no answers. And as the anniversary of his wife's death approaches, Jim Nelson is asking the public for help.
It's been almost a decade since his wife, Becky, was killed in a hit-and-run crash. She had just parked at the Maple Grove Community Center to watch her son play hockey when a car hit her and drove off.
Detectives have yet to find any witnesses.
Jim remembers vividly the days after Becky's death. His son, Robby, was about to play in a championship hockey game.
"I walked him into the locker room," Jim said. "And all these little 10-year-olds were...just kind of hugging on this little guy."
He added: "When he came out, he had the captain band on."
And it didn't stop there.
"His teammates were bound and determined that he was going to score," Jim said.
Robby did. He scored the championship goal.
"I don't think there were too many dry eyes in the place," Jim said.
Robby and his sister, Shari, are now 23 and 20, respectively. Whether the kids and Jim wanted it to or not, life went on without Becky.
Maple Grove Police detective Tanya Petz says police still aren't sure what type of car hit Becky, or even which direction the car was traveling.
Ten years after the tragedy, police are still desperate for tips, and Jim is left without answers.
"How does that happen? That's what everyone says to me," Jim said.
But with answers, Jim says that Feb. 20 -- the anniversary of Becky's death -- might come a little easier.
"There would be nothing that would make me happier than to be able to call Jim and say, 'I have answers for you,'" Petz said.
If you know anything, call Petz at 763-494-6211.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that will help find who killed Becky.
