I-35 Rollover Leaves 2 Teens Dead
BURNSVILLE, Minn. (WCCO) -- Two teens have died after being ejected from a car when it lost control on Buck Hill Road in Burnsville, authorities say.
The Minnesota State Patrol said the crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday near I-35 and County Road 46. They said the car rolled several times down an embankment and landed in the southbound lanes of Interstate-35.
Authorities said the 17-year-old driver of the car was speeding and driving erratically before losing control.
"By all indications, this is a result of driving too fast," said Lt. Eric Roeske of the State Patrol.
He added: "Unfortunately, kids just don't think this stuff is going to happen to them."
Alesha Roehl, 17, of Northfield, and Frederick Alexander, 16, of Burnsville, died following the crash, the State Patrol said. The two were not wearing seat belts.
There were three others in the 1992 Toyota Camry; two of them suffered minor injuries. The driver was found after the crash, crying.
"I can't believe this happened to our group of friends," said one teen who came upon the crash shortly after it happened.
The State Patrol said the right two lanes of southbound I-35 were closed as authorities investigated. They are hoping this crash can serve as a reminder of the importance of driving safely.
