Man Charged With Murder In St. Paul Homicide
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- A St. Paul man has been charged with second-degree murder for allegedly killing a 59-year-old man with a pair of scissors Thursday night near the state Capitol, the Ramsey County Attorney's Office said.
Anthony Jay Haukos, 44, was charged Friday with intentional second-degree murder for the killing of Thomas Stein.
Preliminary information shows that Stein died from a loss of blood resulting from multiple stab wounds to the neck, according to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office.
A criminal complaint paints this picture of the incident: Police responded around 9:30 p.m. to a call about an unruly male in an apartment located on Winter Street. When police arrived, they looked through the apartment window and saw Haukos covered in blood and curled up in a "spooning" position next to the victim's body. Police saw Haukos caress the victim and say, "Look what you made me do. You made me do this."
Police then tried to get Haukos' attention and get him to drop the scissors. In response, Haukos screamed nonsensical statements and stabbed the victim twice in the neck. The victim did not appear to respond to the stabbings.
Police then kicked down the door and found Haukos lying with the victim. They told Haukos to drop the scissors, but he just stared blankly at the officers.
After several commands to drop the scissors, Haukos put them down, and police tried to arrest him. But Haukos resisted, curled himself up in a ball and kicked at the officers, screaming nonsensical, quasi-religious statements, referring to himself as the Devil and Tony Montana. Police used Tasers on Haukos but to no effect. Eventually, several officers were able to handcuff Haukos and get him in a squad car.
Police drove Haukos to Regions Hospital. During the drive, he continued to make religious statements and sometimes sang.
When Haukos was later driven to the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center, police said he told a nurse that he was the Devil and that his victim was a witch.
Haukos is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday, the Ramsey County Attorney's Office said.
