1 Dead, 2 Seriously Hurt In Sandstone Crash
SANDSTONE, Minn. (WCCO) -- A deadly crash between a car and van killed one person and seriously injured two others Friday evening, according to the Pine County Sheriff's Office.
At 8:21 p.m. on the day of the incident, deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 61 at Groningen Road.
The Sheriff's Office says a green sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed while approaching Highway 61. When sedan's driver failed to stop at a stop sign for Hwy 61, a full-sized van traveling on Hwy 61 broadsided the sedan on the passenger side. The 73-year-old passenger of the sedan was killed on impact.
The 37-year-old sedan driver had critical injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and airlifted to Essentia Hospital Duluth.
The driver of the van was not injured, but his passenger, who is his 65-year-old wife, was seriously injured. She was taken in an ambulance to a local hospital and later airlifted to the Essentia Duluth Hospital. As of Monday, she was in stable condition.
There was no indication that the sedan occupants were wearing seat belts. Only the driver side airbag deployed, the Sheriff's Office said.
The accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Office and the State Patrol.
