Report: Rail Delays Cost Minnesota Farmers

A new report estimates that delays in railroad shipping have cost Minnesota corn, soybean and wheat farmers nearly $100 million. The report was released Thursday at a conference in Alexandria organized by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Edward Usset of the University of Minnesota Center for Farm Financial Management estimates rail delays cost Minnesota corn growers $72 million from March to May. He puts the losses at $18.8 million for soybean growers and $8.5 million for wheat growers.

General Mills' Recipe For Higher Sales: Add Fiber, Cinnamon

General Mills hopes a pinch of cinnamon and a dash of fiber will be a recipe for stronger sales. The Minneapolis-based company is doing things like adding more cinnamon to its Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal and rolling out fiber-packed "better for you" cookies to boost the performance of its brands, which include Pillsbury dough, Betty Crocker baking mixes and Progresso soups.

Xcel Blamed For Cost Overruns At Monticello Plant

An investigation by Minnesota utility regulators blames Xcel Energy Inc. for major cost overruns during a project to upgrade its nuclear plant in Monticello. Xcel disagrees that it's to blame. Reports say experts hired by Minnesota utility regulators found Xcel managers didn't fully plan for the job and didn't have adequate oversight.

Catholic Hospital Asked To Cut Ties With Doctor

A La Crosse couple says they want a local Catholic hospital to sever ties with a doctor who they say performs abortions. Leif and Karen Arvidson say Dr. Carl Rose advised them of the option of an abortion at a visit to Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse in 2012. Karen Arvidson also says she was told later she could have an abortion at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Minnesota Farmers Get Good Week For Fieldwork

Minnesota farmers are coming off their best week for fieldwork in nearly a month. Drier conditions gave farmers 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork last week. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's weekly crop progress and condition report for Minnesota says the weather allowed many farmers to catch up on herbicide and fertilizer spraying, and to make progress on the first cutting of alfalfa hay. Some farmers were able to replant soybeans and corn in drowned out areas.
