When his landlord increased his rent by $1,100 a month, Mike Atkins decided he needed to find a new place to live.
According to Realtor.com, listings went up, so it could take a little more to make homes stand out in the future.
The average rent is $2,800 a month. Compare that to $3,100 a month if you are buying a $350,000 house at the current interest rate, adding in insurance and taxes.
"We're committing to building more supply. That's the primary focus of today, supply," said Daniella Levine Cava.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced a goal of 18,000 additional affordable housing units.
"When I go back to Washington, we can look at thing a little differently," she told CBS4's Hank Tester.
Miami-Dade will be hosting the "Building Blocks Housing Summit" at loanDepot Park on Thursday.
Over the last five months, the Miami area has been one of the least affordable housing markets in the country.
"It is so different when you see it for yourself, that's why I'm here, it is important that we address the housing crisis," she said.
