Zo's Son Making Name For Himself On The Court At Ransom Everglades
COCONUT GROVE (CBS4) - For twelve years Alonzo Mourning ruled Miami basketball with a chiseled body and a perpetual scowl on his face.
These days in Coconut Grove, Alonzo Mourning III, who is known around school as Trey, is making a name for himself as a junior at Ransom Everglades High School, smiling while avoiding the pressure of following a famous dad
"There's always going to be that pressure," Mourning told CBS4's Kim Bokamper. "It's not pressure anymore its life you can either look at it as a blessing or a curse."
"There's a lot of perks," said teammate Sam Singer. "Alonzo comes in and gives us advice whenever he can. I build a pretty good relationship with Alonzo also, so it's a lot of fun."
At 6'9" Mourning has teamed up with senior sharp shooter Singer to lead the Raiders to Thursday night's regional semi-final against Key West High School.
"We planned this for five years I think, we are trying to stay focus," said Mourning. "We each know what we are trying to do, and that's bring a state championship to Ransom Everglades"
Mourning grew up watching and playing basketball, but he admits he has a love for another sport. Soccer is close to his heart, with AC Milan being one of his favorite teams on the field.
"Basketball's always in my house, been watching it since I was young, but soccer just came up. Just woke up some day and started watching it," said Mourning.
