Zimmerman Granted New Bond Hearing June 29
ORLANDO (CBSMiami) - Judge Kenneth Lester has agreed to hold a new bond hearing for George Zimmerman as he waits to stand trial on second-degree murder for the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Judge Lester set the bond hearing for the morning of June 29. Until then, Zimmerman will remain behind bars.
Zimmerman's lawyer, Mark O'Mara, requested the new hearing after Lester revoked Zimmerman's bond. Judge Lester agreed with prosecutors who said Zimmerman and his wife Shellie deceived the court during the initial bond hearing in the case.
Zimmerman was originally given a $150,000 bond in April. The low bond was set after Shellie Zimmerman testified the couple had limited funds for bail because she was a full-time student and George wasn't working.
Prosecutors discovered Zimmerman actually had raised $135,000 in donations from a website he had created.
Zimmerman pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. The case has drawn national attention after Zimmerman told police he shot Martin in self-defense.
Prosecutors say the shooting was not justified under Florida's "stand your ground" law and was instead murder.
