Wrongfully Convicted Man Sues Broward Sheriff's Office

MIRAMAR (CBS4) - A Miramar man who was wrongfully convicted in a rape and murder case has filed suit against the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Anthony Caravella, 43, spent 26 years in prison before DNA evidence exonerated him.

Also named in the suit is the Miramar Police Department. Caravella claims both law enforcement agencies framed him for the 1983 murder of 58-year old Ada Cox Jankowski whose body was found in a field at Miramar Elementary School.

His attorney at the time said that police forced a confession from Caravella, who was only 15 at the time and had an IQ of 67.  His attorney claimed Caravella was beaten, coerced and only confessed in exchange for the release of a female friend who was arrested with him.

Caravella's suit seeks unspecified damages from the city, the sheriff's office and several other individuals are no longer with the office.
