Worker Stabbed In Parking Structure Of Shops At Sunset Place
SOUTH MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The driver suspected of stabbing a parking attendant at the Shops at Sunset Place in a dispute over a parking fee has turned himself in, according to South Miami Police.
Juan Felipe Rodriguez, 19, surrendered to police late Tuesday night.
South Miami Police say Jimmy Womble, 23, was working as a cashier in the parking structure when a pickup truck driven by Rodriguez approached the exit.
Surveillance video shows an altercation between Womble and Rodriguez. At some point, police say, Rodriguez stabbed Womble, then barreled through the barrier gate and drove off in an unknown direction.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took Womble to Kendall Regional Medical Center.
Police say the dispute was over a parking fee of $8.
"It went above and beyond for something so stupid as a parking fee that he's gotta pay," said Major Rene Landa of South Miami Police.
Womble's sister Patricia was shocked when he called to tell her he had been stabbed at work.
"I said, 'stabbed you where?'! And he said, 'in the arm!'" said Patricia Blackmon.
Patricia told CBS4's Gio Benitez that the stabbing of her brother couldn't have come at a worse time. Doctors have just told the family that their mother is close to death.
"Who would've thought that my brother would've gone to work, knowing what's going on with our mom, and then this happens?" said Blackmon.
"Sometimes people make stupid mistakes, especially when they're young kids," said Major Landa.
Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
