CLERMONT (CBSMiami/AP) — A central Florida woman was shot by a sheriff's deputy after she reached for her phone.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office said the incident began when one of their deputies pulled Robin Pearson, 51, over for running a stop sign in a stolen car in Paisley, which is north of Orlando.
Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Fred Jones said Pearson then got out of the vehicle and started walking aggressively toward the deputy.
When the deputy told her to get back in the car, Jones said she didn't and reached into her pocket. That's when the deputy, fearing for his safety, fired. It turned out she had a cellphone and no weapons.
Pearson was taken to the hospital where she was listed as stable. She faces several charges including grand theft auto.
