Woman Injured After Acid Bomb Explodes In Mailbox
DAVIE (CBSMiami) – A Davie woman was injured after some sort of explosive went off in her mailbox.
Laura Beaver, 38, who lives in 6500 block of NW 47th Street, told police she was home Tuesday night when she heard a loud 'boom' between 10:30 p.m. or 11 p.m. She said she didn't think anything about it.
It was when she left her home Wednesday that she noticed the door to her mailbox was hanging from the opening.
When she reached inside, she told police her hand touched a plastic bottle and she immediately experienced a burning sensation.
She called police to report it and was treated for minor injuries by Davie Fire Rescue. Police suspect the material inside the bottle and the mailbox was some sort of acid.
"Because it went off before she was there, she's okay. But if you're in the proximity of a bomb like that (and it goes off), you can suffer second and third degree burns," said police spokesman Captain Dale Engle.
Beaver reportedly has an estranged relationship with her daughters. Police are looking into whether one of her daughters and the daughter's boyfriend, who Beaver described as a gang member, may have been responsible.
Dale said since the incident involved a mailbox they are looking into possible federal charges of deploying a destructive device.
