Winter Storm Forcing Flight Delays, Cancellations
MIAMI (CBS4) – Flight delays and cancellations are mounting after a winter storm that blew through the nation's midsection on Christmas Day makes its way to the Northeast.
At Miami International Airport on Wednesday Amy Wilson hoped her plan to get to Boston would work.
"I'm leaving early because I'm afraid I may not make it if I leave at 5:30 p.m.," she told CBS4's David Sutta.
Many travelers at MIA and Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International were rushing to get out of South Florida, hoping to beat the wicked weather about to roll into the Northeast.
When asked if she minded circling New York for a bit while the pilot of her plane waited their turn to land, Jean Solomon asked rhetorically "Do I have a choice? What's my choice?'
Nationwide, more than 900 flights around the U.S. were canceled as of Wednesday midday, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com.

Only a sprinkle of those cancellations happened at South Florida airports, most of the delays are from Texas through the Gulf Coast and Midwest regions.
"We left Palm Springs (California) at 7:30 in the morning. We going into Dallas on time and then our plane was delayed. And then it started to snow. And then it rained and then it snowed," said Linda Horsager.
That was Tuesday.
"It's the most unusual Christmas I have ever had," said Horsager.
At MIA, Horsager and her husband were trying to get to the Turks and Caicos where their bags are already.
"I can get out tonight but my husband can't get out until tomorrow at noon," said Horsager.
Guy Lavoie, who was heading back to Montreal, said he hopes he'll get lucky and his flight will leave MIA on time.
"We were on cruise ship so we didn't check anything. Didn't want to check anything. So we will see what it look like in a little bit," said Lavoie.
Lavoie added that if he flight was canceled he wouldn't mind spending another day in South Florida.
Airport officials said if you have a flight out Wednesday or Thursday to an airport in the Northeast, you may want to check with your airline.
