Why "Walker" When You Can Ride
KEY WEST (CBSMiami/FKNB) - What a sight to see on Sunday as thousands of eerily costumed zombies pedaled bicycles beside the Atlantic Ocean and through the streets of Key West during the fourth annual Zombie Bike Ride.
Participants wore everything from dead-white face paint and "traditional" gory zombie costumes to "walking dead" garb that spoofed surprisingly lively current events.
Standouts of the ride included an "Uncle Sam" with a "broken heart" and two "zombie women" in bathing suits portraying endurance swimmer Diana Nyad, who recently swam from Cuba to Key West.
Other notable riders included a fearsome group in decayed formal wear, zombies in gauzy tutus and a costumed "butcher" pulling a wagon of fake "body parts."
Organizer Marky Pierson said the event attracted more than 7,500 participants for the procession that rolled along Key West's Atlantic Ocean shoreline to the island city's famed Duval Street for themed gatherings at local watering holes.
The Zombie Bike Ride coincided with the first weekend of Key West's annual Fantasy Fest costuming and masking festival that continues through Sunday, Oct. 27 and features Nyad as the grand marshal of Saturday night's Fantasy Fest Parade.
