White House: Florida Will Reinstate Canceled Health Insurance Policies
WASHINGTON D.C. (CBSMiami) – Florida officials have assured the White House that they will fully cooperate with President Obama's plans to have insurers reinstate anyone's canceled health insurance policies.
The president went on national television to make the announcement about the policy reinstatement change on Thursday, reversing cancellations that followed the October 1st implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) announced that he had also been told by administration officials that his home state will cooperate.
On the floor of the Senate Thursday afternoon, Nelson said, "I think the President did the right thing."
Because health insurance is regulated by the state, Florida officials will have to approve reinstatement of the canceled policies.
"Congress enacted health care reform to help uninsured Americans get coverage, and it was not intended to take away from folk's policies they're happy with," Nelson said. "The president did the right thing today. Now, the administration has to fix the website and start getting new enrollees through the door."
As a former Florida Cabinet member and the elected insurance commissioner of Florida in the mid-1990's, Nelson's duties included regulating health insurance.
