MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While South Florida won't be dealing with a hurricane this weekend, we should brace for heavy rain from a tropical disturbance now over the Bahamas.

The National Hurricane Center said Friday the system has a 20 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression by Sunday. It's expected to emerge into the Gulf of Mexico early next week and has a 60 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression by midweek.

The system is moving west-northwestward at about 10 mph.

The system is expected to drop up to 2 inches of rain starting Saturday in South Florida with possible flash flooding Sunday in the Miami area and the Florida Keys.

Monroe County officials said they expect the Keys to get the worst of it on Sunday and Monday with periods of heavy rainfall, possibly up to 4 inches. Sustained winds are expected of less than 25 mph, although gusts of up to 40 mph are possible during thunderstorms.

Spokesman Randy Smith of the South Florida Water Management District says water levels have been lowered in area canals in anticipation of the storm.
