Water Back On Along Hallandale Beach After Main Break
HALLANDALE BEACH (CBS4) - Thousands of beach area residents were left high and dry for several hours in Hallandale Beach after a water main was severed.
It happened at 1980 South Ocean Drive just around 9 a.m.
"I was taking a shower and the water stopped," said Dave Katz who lives in one of the condos along the beach. "Can't use the toilets, nothing to drink no water."
According to Hallandale Beach spokesman Peter Dobens, approximately 8,000 condo units were affected. The water main serves all the residents east of the Intracoastal from Hallandale Beach Boulevard south to the county line.
"Housekeeping can't do the laundry, so we do without until we can get some water," said Jacques Van Belle who lives in the Seaside Retirement community. "But we're happy campers."
Hallandale Beach public works crews worked for hours pumping excess water down drains and working on the repair.
By 3 p.m. the line was repaired and the water was flowing again.
Mayor Joy Cooper said a subcontractor drilling to lay a fiber optic line accidently drilled through the eight inch pipe.
City officials say all residents east of the Intracoastal Waterway should boil their water as a precautionary for the next 24 hours.
"The safety of our residents is our first concern, that is why we are exercising an abundance of caution in issuing a 24-hour boil water order for all customers on the barrier island," said City Manager Renee Crichton. "We will be working with the Broward County Health Department to test the water before lifting this precautionary boil water order."
