Water District's Wehle Steps Down
WEST PALM BEACH (CBS4) -- South Florida Water Management District Executive Director Carol Wehle will step down from the post she's had for six years as the district and others face scrutiny over spending decisions and may see their budgets cut by at least 25 percent.
In an email to colleagues sent Wednesday afternoon, Wehle did not give a reason for her departure. She said it was with "mixed emotions," that she announced plans to step down effective April 29.
"While there's never a perfect time to leave an organization like the South Florida Water Management District – our work is never done - it is the right time for me, and I am excited about the prospect of new professional opportunities," Wehle said in the email.
The South Florida district has been an integral partner in Everglades cleanup efforts, for which it has come under fire from some fronts for its decision to purchase land 28,400 acres from U.S. Sugar Corp. for $197 million.
The district oversees water supplies, guards against flooding and leads Everglades restoration in a 16-county region stretching from Orlando to the Keys.
