Wasserman Schultz Calls Out Gov. Scott Over Healthcare
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/FNSF) - Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has called out Gov. Rick Scott for not adhering to U.S. Supreme Court rulings on the health care law.
After keynoting a Democratic fundraiser Tuesday, Wasserman Schultz visited the state Capitol on Wednesday.
Wasserman Schultz, who served in the state House and Senate before going to Congress, called out Republican leaders for ignoring a U.S. Supreme Court ruling and last year's election that show support for the federal health care law.
She also said they were acting like a bunch of children.
"Spoiled children who are stomping their feet and insisting because they didn't get their way that they are not going to let anyone benefit from the outcome," she said. "It's irresponsible."
Wasserman Schultz also said Scott should take a stronger stand on the federal health care law. Scott had opposed the federal health care law, but has said he supports Medicaid expansion.
"While it's very nice that Gov. Scott has had a deathbed conversion and decided that he does want to accept the federal funds, it's time for him to get off the sidelines," said Wasserman Schultz. "Either he's for accepting those founds and is willing to use his clout and his weight and put the full weight of his office behind that position, or he's not."
Wasserman Schultz also criticized House Speaker Will Weatherford for refusing to expand health care coverage.
"Florida voters realize that the Republican Party has departed from the center and departed from moderate, balanced policymaking," she said. "I think that's why we picked up seats in the state House, we picked up seats in the state Senate, we picked up seats in the congressional delegation, the president won re-election."
