Walmart Looking To Fill Hundreds Jobs At New Miami Store
MIAMI (CBS4) - Walmart has gone on a hiring spree of sorts to fill hundreds of positions at a new store in Miami-Dade.
The discount retail giant has set up a temporary hiring center at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo Center to help handle the hiring of more than 350 workers for its new store being constructed near the intersection of 87th Avenue and Coral Way.
The hiring center will be open a total of 45 days and will take job applications from Monday through Friday, August 5. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The company asked for applicants to submit applications online before coming to the hiring center.
More than 2,700 people have already applied online.
Construction on the store will employ 400 people, with 350 permanent positions being offered once the store opens up.
It is welcome news for job seekers.
"I been looking for work and I really haven't been getting call backs or anything," said Victoria Obarrio, who has been out of work for three years. "I've placed a lot of applications everywhere, I just haven't gotten nothing."
Obarrio isn't alone. While an economic recovery may be happening in some areas, unemployment in Miami-Dade County has soared above 13 percent; jobs are a scarce commodity.
Full-time positions at Walmart average $12.81 and hour. Walmart is hoping to get some new employees looking for job growth opportunities.
"I myself I've been working for Walmart fo 12 years," said General Manager Kevin Perry. "I started as an hourly intern and I never thought that 12 years later I'd be running my own store."
Positions available at the new store include supervisors, managers, cashiers, and others.
