Search Teams Find Wreckage Of Missing S. Florida Plane
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – Search crews, searching in a remote location in Virginia, spotted the wreckage of a plane that left South Florida and never reached its Virginia destination.
The search was on in an extremely remote section of the Great Dismal Swamp Friday, according to Virginia State Police, when the wreckage was spotted Friday afternoon.
Four victims on the plane have been identified. Theodore Bradshaw, 61, his wife Mary Ann Bradshaw, 48, of Fort Lauderdale and 64-year-old Charles and his wife Diane Rodd, 58, of Palm Beach were identified as being on the plane.
The four of them, according to Virginia State Police, were going to a wedding. The plane was found about a half-mile from their last reported location to communication tower.
Ground crews were trying to make their way to the site Friday evening, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.
She said the crew of a privately owned helicopter assisting in the search spotted the wreckage shortly after 4 p.m. and notified state police, who were unable to launch their own aerial search because of bad weather.
The Civil Air Patrol, park rangers and rescue personnel searched on the ground and by boat through a heavily forested area in the northern part of the swamp Friday. Canine teams also were brought in.
There was no immediate word whether the pilot was flying solo or with passengers.
