Vigil Held For Taxi Driver Killed On The Job
DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) — The children of a cab driver killed in a car accident earlier this month are grateful for the show of support from their classmates. They held a vigil Wednesday night at North Miami High School.
Broward Sheriff's Office said a taxi cab and a red pick up truck collided in Dania Beach on October 7th which killed the driver of the Friendly cab, 53-year old Frantz Joseph and injured four others.
Paul Joseph, the cab driver's son, told CBS4's Jamie Guirola, "I think it was kind of special but I want to thank them because this is kind of nice. I didn't think nobody would do this for my dad."
Junior Joseph, said, "It helps knowing that people care." And Rose Joseph said, "They're being very supportive I like that. It helps me get through the situation."
Since 16-year-old Rose Joseph and her two brothers lost their father, Rose has been stressing about the family's finances. That's when some students who heard about the tragedy fallen on the Joseph family, they felt inclined to do something about it and not stand idle.
"Honestly, I feel for the student whose father is like this because I know, personally, my dad's a taxi cab driver so the moment my teacher told me about this, it really hit me," said North Miami High School student Kauvinsky Desasde.
Desasde is one of a handful of students at the school who organized the vigil for Joseph and a fundraiser for his two surviving children—who are fellow students at the same school and total strangers.
"I actually feel that strong connection toward them. Even though I don't know them, I could fit in the same shoes they're walking in right now," said Desasde.
Cynthia Infante, a junior, also felt like she needed to do something when she heard about what happened.
"I may not have a father who is a taxi cab driver, but I do know a lot and I do know how hard it is and I do know the harsh conditions they have," said Infante.
These strong-minded students worked together to turn a tragedy into a common goal.
"We're few kids who care and I don't want that anymore. I don't want that one kid in the group to care, no. I want the whole school to see something about this like care...that's literally what we want," said Infante.
Broward Sheriff's deputies said they are still investigating the crash and it could be 90 days before investigators make any conclusions.
