Vigil Held For Former UM Player That Died After Causeway Crash
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - On what would have been JoJo Nicolas 25th birthday, family and friends gathered Monday night in Florida City for a candlelight vigil.
Nicolas, a former University of Miami football player, died last Wednesday—two days after he rear-ended a tractor trailer truck on the MacArthur Causeway.
The vigil was held Monday night at Loren Roberts Park.
"JoJo was one of those guys who that, you know, didn't say much but when he'd say something, everybody listened," said Coach Al Golden. "God received a great teammate."
Former team members, friends and family—including JoJo Nicolas' mother, were in attendance to remember, and honor him.
"Proves to me that his life was a shining light to others," said his mother. "…I mean whenever anybody speaks about us it's with good-nature and that just lets us know that we did a job well done and he took what we gave him and he ran with it and still kept passing it on to others."
Nicolas was active on social media in the hours before the crash. Police are looking into whether alcohol, texting or fatigue played a role in the accident.
