FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Fort Lauderdale police released surveillance video Thursday that they hope will lead them to a pair of killers.
Surveillance cameras rolled outside a Fort Lauderdale apartment complex at 2400 N.W. 22nd Street in the Rock Island neighborhood Tuesday night.
The video shows a blue car heading out of the complex. Investigators said 52-year-old Gary Martin was inside. Next, you see two men walk to the car. The vehicle stops and the men get in.
Seconds later, Martin's driver's side door opens and one of the men gets out. A short time later that man returns and then both men take off.
Surveillance cameras captured them running away while another camera shows the two men a short time later running with a third person and without their hoods.
Meanwhile, police said Martin lay dying in his car from multiple gunshot wounds.
A resident, Gerald, who did not want to give his last name, lives in the apartment complex.
"It's just a senseless act by three individuals who have no regard for human life," he told CBS4's Carey Codd
He said what makes this crime even worse is that his 8-year-old daughter and several other children were playing on a playground in the complex a short distance from the shooting. He said the children heard the gunshots.
"As a father it's terrifying," he said. "Only thing I could do is console her."
Investigators said they don't know why Martin stopped the car or if he knew the two men.
Gerald said police were in the complex Thursday evening handing out flyers and trying to see if anyone saw anything. He hopes the killers grow a conscience and come forward.
"You did the crime and you need to turn yourself and own up to what you did," Gerald said. "Give this family some closure."
