Veterans Swim For A Cause In The Keys
ISLAMORADA (CBSMiami/FKNB) - Nine relay swimmers, including active duty military, retired service members and one military spouse, are endeavoring to swim 50 kilometers in a 24-hour time period as part of a Veteran's Day fundraiser in the Florida Keys.
Each person swims for about 45 minutes until the next relay team member takes over.
The 50km Freedom Swim is intended to raise money for 2014 adventure camps for teenage children of fallen military personnel, as well as raise awareness for Gold Star Teen Adventures, the foundation behind the event.
Formed by Kent Solheim, a special operations veteran severely wounded in Iraq in 2007, GSTA provides healing, mentorship, character development and opportunities to children of special operations service members who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Organizers hope to raise $100,000 for the cause.
GSTA first began providing summer scuba diving experiences, and has expanded to include swimming, sailing and other outdoor adventures.
