Israel Set To Face Lamberti For Broward Sheriff
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – Democratic voters in Broward County have spoken on several races, including Broward Sheriff, County Clerk, and State Attorney.
Scott Israel, 56, has defeated Louis Granteeed Tuesday night. With 99 percent of the precincts reporting, Israel had 67 percent of the vote compared to Granteed's 33 percent.
"We got a resounding win tonight and the county spoke loud and clear and said Team Israel is where we want to be," Israel told CBS 4's Carey Codd. "We want to make sure we're treating the employees with dignity and respect. I want to bring a cultural change to the agency that's in dire need of it."
He also said that, if elected, he would bring in voices with unique and differing opinions.
"I don't want to surround myself with people who tell me what I want to hear," Israel said.
Israel, 56, was chief of the North Bay Village Police Department from 2004 until 2008. He spent decades with the Fort Lauderdale Police, retiring as a captain and SWAT commander. In 2008, he defeated four primary candidates to challenge Mr. Lamberti, a Republican, and lost.
Israel wants a change of culture at BSO, along with more diversity and to look for ways to keep kids out of jail. One plan is looking at a civil citation program for first time offenders.
Israel now goes on to face the current sheriff, Republican Al Lamberti, in the November 6th general election.
BROWARD COUNTY CLERK
Howard C. Forman, 66, the long-time clerk of Broward County easily beat back a reelection challenge from attorney Robert R. Lockwood, 34, Tuesday.
Forman won 71 percent of the vote with 99 percent of the precincts reporting to Lockwood, a former prosecutor in the Broward State Attorney's Office, who won just 29 percent of the ballot.
Because there was a write-in candidate, only registered Democrats could vote in this race, but the winner's name is the only one that will appear on the general election ballot.
The county clerk has a vital role in keeping the operations of the state's judicial system working smoothly. In Broward, the office has 800 employees keeping track of county judicial records and proceedings.
BROWARD STATE ATTORNEY
Finally, Mike Satz, Broward State Attorney for almost 36 years, beat his challenger Chris Mancini by 23 points, with 99 percent of the precincts reporting. Mancini is a former federal prosecutor turned general-practice attorney.
The state attorney oversees a staff of 509 employees including 214 prosecutors.
Satz will now face Republican attorney Jim Lewis in the Nov. 6 general election.
