MIAMI LAKES (CBSMiami) — A veteran arrested for allegedly shooting inside his Miami Lakes apartment and almost hit the responding police officers appeared in bond court Monday.
Steven Murray Gunther, 67, told Judge Maria Espinosa Dennis he was on a "hallucinogenic drug" when he began firing shots in his apartment located at 6915 Main Street.
Neighbors say the sound of gunfire startled them shortly after 9:00 a.m. Saturday.
"I heard a couple of shots in the morning," said neighbor Ovidio Amaro. "I was scared. I was concerned about what was happening."
Gunther had reportedly stopped shooting for a bit, but when officers arrived he started shooting through his front door again.
"As they approached the apartment, the subject began shooting at the officers," said Miami-Dade Police Department Det. Marjorie Eloi. "The officers then secured the apartment and secured the area for public safety."
Police said there was a standoff before they were finally able to take him into custody.
There were no injuries to the police or Gunther.
Police said they retrieved a high-powered rifle, a shotgun and multiple rounds of ammunition.
Gunther is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, shooting a deadly missile and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
The judge ordered Gunther held on $123,500 bond.
