Vero Beach Site For Ice Age Dig
VERO BEACH (CBSMiami/AP) — The Sunshine state will officially be the location of an Ice Age dig.
Officials are signing an agreement that will allow an archaeological dig to move forward in Vero Beach.
The agreement being signed Monday will allow researchers from Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania to excavate a site where Ice Age fossils of animals were discovered almost 100 years ago.
Along with evidence of mastodons and saber-tooth cats, archaeologists found human remains that they named "Vero Man."
Researchers hope the new dig helps them determine Vero Man's age, which has been steeped in controversy.
Some scientists believe Vero Man may not be as old as the extinct animals due to mixing of geological layers.
Scientists believe Vero Man is at least 13,000 years old.
After the fossils are analyzed in Pennsylvania, they will return to Florida.
