Verlander Signs Record Contract For Pitchers
DETROIT (CBSMiami) – While the Miami Marlins are in full salary slashing mode, the Detroit Tigers, who played in last year's World Series, are making a big investment in the future of the team.
The Tigers and pitching ace Justin Verlander have agreed upon a five-year contract extension that is worth $180 million over the next seven years, plus a vesting option for the final season that could make the contract worth $202 million over eight years.
According to CBSSports.com, Verlander will be paid $20 million in 2013 and 2014 and then $28 million through 2019. The vesting option season of 2020 will be worth $22 million.
Verlander, a perennial All-Star, was selected with the second overall pick in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft.
In case you were wondering, the Marlins have only selected two players who went on to be All-Stars in the first-round of the MLB Draft.
