BOYNTON BEACH (CBSMiami/AP) — The search is on for the vandal who spray painted obscenities on the street signs of a Boynton Beach mosque.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations said surveillance cameras at the Alamin Center of Florida recorded a car entering the parking lot about 12:40 a.m. Wednesday. The group says an individual got out of the car and painted "(Explicit) Islam. F... ISIS"on the entrance signs.
"They are painting with a broad brush when they bracket ISIS and Islam together. This mosque here opposes ISIS," a friend of the mosque, Rabbi Barry Silver, told CBS affiliate WPEC in West Palm Beach.
CAIR wants the vandalism investigated as a hate crime.
In September, a Fort Pierce mosque sometimes attended by Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen was torched. A suspect was arrested. Several weeks earlier, a worshipper at that mosque was struck in the face in the parking lot.
In August, fires at two Tampa-area mosques were also ruled to be arson.
