UTD President: Place A Moratorium On The FCAT
MIAMI (CBS4) - Two opponents of the FCAT take aim at the controversial test on CBS4's News & Views with Eliott Rodriguez this weekend.
United Teachers of Dade President Karen Aronowitz wants the state to declare a moratorium on the FCAT. She points to the dismal performance by 4th graders on the writing section of the test. While 81 percent passed the writing test last year, only 27% got a passing grade this year. The State Board of Education responded by dropping the grading standards for the test.
Broward School Board member Nora Rupert plans to present a resolution before the Broward School Board calling for the state to move away from the FCAT.
"Everybody is done with the FCAT." Rupert said. "When it comes to teaching and kids there can't be one be all end all. You have to have more than one assessment otherwise everyone loses."
Rupert added that the only winner in the FCAT scores debacle is Pearson Testing, the company that has a multi-million dollar contract with the state of Florida to administer the FCAT.
Aronowitz also took aim at the test. "The FCAT has corrupted what educational achievement means for our schools."
