USS Cole Coming To Port Everglades
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – Sailors on board the USS Cole are about to get some much needed R&R in South Florida.
The USS Cole is a Navy destroyer which was targeted in a terrorist attack in Yemen in October 2000. Seventeen American sailors were killed and 39 were injured.
The Navy destroyer is scheduled to arrive at Port Everglades Thursday morning for three days of shore leave. It'll leave Saturday evening.
Anyone who wants to see the USS Cole's arrival can do so from the jetty on the inlet's north side, though its exact sailing time depends on its readiness and other vessel traffic, said Mary Anne Gray, chair of Broward Navy Days, which is helping coordinate the ship's visit, according to the Sun Sentinel.
There's a "toast the crew" public party Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at Briny's Pub on Fort Lauderdale's downtown Riverwalk.
During their layover, crew members will also be treated to fishing trips, a Miami Dolphins exhibition game and a visit by the Dolphins cheerleaders.
