Univision, Disney Said In Talks For English 24-Hour-News
DORAL (CBSMiami) - Are the companies behind Mickey Mouse and Don Francisco ready to get into the news business together, in English? Reports are circulating the two companies are in talks to do just that, targeted at Hispanics who speak English, and that they'd like to be running before election day.
Both sources declined to go on the record with the Associated Press because they were not authorized to speak.
The move comes in response to the 2010 census, which showed U.S. born Hispanics were the fastest growing segment of the nation's Hispanic population. That indicates media companies which have relied on primarily Spanish-speaking audiences must reach out to second and third-generation Hispanics who speak English as their first language.
This would be the first partner between Disney and a mainstream Hispanic media company, and could possibly see a sharing of resources between Univision and ABC News, which is owned by Disney.
NBC is already broadcasting a digital news channel that combines national content with local offerings, and other networks are looking at similar proposals.
Univision's national news program is broadcast from Doral, and it's news operation is headquartered in South Florida.
