Lockdown Lifted At University of Miami
CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – The University of Miami Coral Gables campus spent much of Sunday night on alert with students being told to stay indoors.
According to officials with Coral Gables Police, a driver was involved in a road rage incident on US 1.
The victim called police and said the person was armed and was threatening using the weapon.
Also, the victim said the subject was possibly in the area of 57th Avenue and Levante Avenue.
Officers were concerned the subject was on the University of Miami campus so University of Miami Police sent out alerts to students telling them to stay indoors as a precaution and to continue watching for updates.
Students inside the Red Road Commons apartment building were asked to stay indoors and no one else was allowed inside.
The first alert went out over the university's website, via voice mail and via Twitter just before 8:30 p.m.
Irene Nutiganti, a student, said, "Basically they said that there's an intruder that's armed and we should stay away from the area". Another student, Christian Mock Said, " I got a text message and voice mail both saying that there was somebody potentially armed near us."
Logan Hulsmeyer, a student, said, "I didn't really listen to it at first until I got talked to by a lady saying there's somebody on the loose who was armed and it kind of made me pay a little bit more attention to it".
It is not clear where the subject may be, but he was not located in the search area. He was described as a white Hispanic male wearing a white t-shirt with a ponytail.
A helicopter and police dogs were used during the search.
Officers located a white pick-up truck that possibly belonged to the subject.
Coral Gables Police cleared the scene and allowed students in and out of their apartments again by 11 p.m.
Nutiganti said, "I mean it's definitely scary but its better to know then to walk into a situation that you don't know whats going on so I think its very helpful."
