Uncle Sam May Owe You Money

MIAMI (CBS4) - Uncle Sam owes more than 100 thousand taxpayers nationwide money. The problem is, however, 'he' can't find them.

The Internal Revenue Service reports they have almost $165-million in refunds from 2010 they need to return to taxpayers. The agency said the refunds were mailed out, but came back because the taxpayer was not at the listed address.

About ten percent of those who have refund money with their name on it are from Florida, according to CBS4 Chief Consumer Investigator Al Sunshine.

According to federal law, the IRS is not allowed to post the names of those owed money publically. They can be, however, released for other groups to post.

Sunshine checked out the thousands of names on the list and found the IRS owes about $19 million to more than 11-thousand Florida taxpayers. The average refund - more than $17-hundred dollars.

The best way for you to see if your name's on the list is to go to the "where's my refund" page at www.irs.gov.

But, the "Where's My Refund" listing only works for this years' filling season.

You'll need your tax identification information, including the year you expected to get your refund. You'll also need to know how much you're owed, so you're going to need to go thru your old tax records.

To check to see if you may be owed any money from previous years, you will have to contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
