UM's Morris On Unitas Award Watchlist
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – University of Miami Hurricanes quarterback Stephen Morris has been named to the Unitas Award Watchlist for the coming season.
The Unitas Award is named after legendary quarterback Johnny Unitas and is given annually to the nation's top quarterback. The 2012 Unitas Award was won by Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Collin Klein.
Morris threw for 3,345 yards, 21 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions in 2012 posting a quarterback rating of 138.07. Morris has said he wants to improve his completion percentage in 2013 after hitting on 58 percent of his passes last year.
Given the monster offensive line Morris will have in front of him, plus the return of a dynamic running game with Duke Johnson, the Canes quarterback could be poised to put up some of the best numbers from a UM quarterback in years.
But, getting to the top of the Unitas Award list will be tough. Among the other names on the list are: Clemson's Tajh Boyd, Alabama's A.J. McCarron, Georgia's Aaron Murray, Virginia Tech's Logan Thomas, and Fresno State's Derek Carr.
The Southeastern Conference led the way with six quarterbacks on the list while the ACC had five make the Unitas Award watchlist.
