UM's Al Golden Is Staying In Miami
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Looks like University of Miami football's head coach Al Golden is staying in Miami.
Golden released a statement Sunday saying, "There has been much speculation concerning my future at the University of Miami. While I am flattered that our progress at The U during an extremely difficult period of time is recognized, I am also appreciative of just what we have here at UM and I am not a candidate for another position. We are eager to welcome our student athletes back to campus next week and visit with prospective student-athletes and their families beginning January 15."
As of Saturday there had been no official word, according to our news partners at The Sun Sentinel, Miami athletic director Blake James told the paper he had spoken with Golden.
"Al and I are in regular communication. He is our football coach and I believe he will be our coach going forward," James wrote in a text message to the Sentinel.
As rumors swirled that Golden was being targeted to be the next head coach at Penn State, Golden had remained mum until Sunday about whether he was being considered or would consider the job or if he was firmly committed to UM.
Golden played and coached at Penn State in the past and at one time was considered a possible heir apparent to the late Joe Paterno.
In his third season at Miami, Golden led the Hurricanes to a 9-4 record and their first bowl game since 2010.
