UM Performing Trials On Heart Monitor
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A clinical trial of an early heart attack detection device designed to track significant changes in the heart's electrical signal and alert patients to seek medical attention is underway at the University of Miami Health System.
The investigational study of the AngelMed Guardian monitor will play a significant role for FDA approval.
The system may potentially detect heart attacks that have no symptoms or symptoms that are not typical.
"The device is implanted underneath the skin. It's connected inside of the heart to detect any changes inside of the heart that indicate a heart attack is about to occur," said Dr. Claudia A. Martinez Bermudez, who heads UHealth clinical trials.

According to the latest American Heart Association statistics, one out of every six deaths in the U.S. was attributable to coronary heart disease. Each year, an estimated 785,000 Americans will have a new heart attack, and 470,000 will have a recurrent attack.
Over the past two decades, it has routinely taken patients 2-3 hours to arrive at the hospital with a heart attack. Initial studies indicate that AngelMed Guardian monitor may reduce that time to approximately 20 minutes.
