UM Looking For Credit From NCAA For Self-Enforced Scholarship Limits
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The University of Miami Hurricanes football team lost nine scholarships over three years due to the Nevin Shapiro scandal, but the school is hoping the NCAA may give the school credit for self-enforced scholarship restrictions.
According to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald, the Canes had made "internal adjustments" to keep scholarship numbers down in preparation for the NCAA's likely penalties for the scandal. Now, UM hopes the NCAA will give them credit for those losses, or that the future losses wouldn't be as bad when they hit, according to the Herald.
Schools are limited to 85 scholarships per year for the football team. UM has not revealed how many scholarships it has adjusted, but has said it is working with the NCAA to deal with the issue.
According to the Herald, there is no timetable on when UM will hear back from the NCAA on this aspect of the penalties, but the school hopes it will be well ahead of February's National Signing Day.
