UM Hurricanes Football Player Suspended For Season
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The University of Miami (UM) football team will be without one of their highly touted defensive ends this season. The university has suspended Al-Quadin Muhammad from the campus because of an issue off the field.
Sources told CBS4 News partner the Miami Herald said Muhammad is being disciplined over a confrontation months ago that left a roommate with a broken nose.
A UM spokesperson said the suspension came down from the school, not the football team. Beyond not playing football this season, Muhammad is barred from attending classes this semester. The school said Muhammad can return to classes next semester, if he chooses.
A source told the Herald a decision like this was most likely handed down by Vice President of Student Affairs Patricia Whitely.
"Al-Quadin Muhammad is not currently enrolled for the fall semester and will not be participating in athletics,'' UM spokesperson Margot Winick told the Miami Herald.
According to two Herald sources, the football staff is not happy with the ruling.
"He's sorely missed,'' Golden said Tuesday. "He's a great kid. He's one of our leaders. He's a competitor. So, again, it's a difficult situation and we're all just letting it run the proper course or proper channels if you will.''
UM will redshirt him this year, so if he decides to return after the 2014 season he will have three years of eligibility left.
Muhammad is the second four-star prospect the football team has lost this season. Safety Kiy Hester transferred to Rutgers because of a family medical issue.
