UM Hires Mario Cristobal As Associate Head Coach
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – University of Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden has made one of the shrewdest hires of the offseason. Golden has hired Mario Cristobal to be an associate head coach and tight ends coach.
The move was reported by the Associated Press and confirmed by CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman.
Last year's tight ends coach, Brennan Caroll, will take over as the U's wide receivers coach.
Cristobal was unceremoniously fired by Florida International University just after the end of last season. The Panthers struggled in 2012, but were coming off back to back bowl seasons for the first time in school history.
When FIU announced the Cristobal firing, it stunned not only the head coach, but most of the college football world. FIU has since hired Ron Turner as the team's new head coach.
Cristobal is no stranger to the U. He was an assistant coach from 2004-2006 before taking over at FIU. He also played for UM from 1988 to 1992.
Cristobal has also proven himself to be a great recruiter in South Florida and will bring an energy and toughness UM needs as it looks to regain its footing as a national power.
