UM Continues Comical Wait For NCAA Ruling
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A few weeks ago, CBSMiami.com had a little fun checking in on some of the stuff that has happened since the initial allegations were made by disgraced former University of Miami Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro were first made.
As UM continues to wait for the NCAA Committee on Infractions to finally issue a ruling on the school's alleged infractions, the time it's taken the NCAA to take action has become, for lack of a better way of putting it, comical.
The bungled NCAA investigation, hearing before the Committee on Infractions, and now the seemingly never-ending wait for the punishment has gone on for multiple years. Just the wait for the punishment has gone on for months.
As ESPN's Jay Bilas put it on Twitter Monday, "It has been over 70 days since Miami's hearing before the NCAA. In ten weeks, the NCAA could investigate (and clear) itself five times."
Bilas was referring to the two-week outside investigation the NCAA had to undertake after major problems were found in the investigation of the Hurricanes' program.
Monday morning, the Associated Press' Tim Reynolds put the ongoing investigation thusly, "If you were a FRESHMAN when the NCAA investigation of Miami actually started, then good luck with the start of your SENIOR year today."
Here's a look at some of the other things that have happened since the first report from Yahoo! Sports spelled out the alleged improprieties at UM.
- The Miami Heat have won back-to-back NBA Championships (June 2012 and June 2013)
- The Miami Dolphins have gone through three head coaches (Tony Sparano, Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin)
- Reggie Bush played his entire career for the Miami Dolphins (the NCAA loves Reggie so much)
- The world didn't end on 12/21/12
- The Royal Baby was conceived and born
- Two Congresses have served in Washington, DC
- Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria actually spent money on the roster, then sold it all off
- The Marlins still aren't winning (no winning seasons in that time span)
- Trayvon Martin was shot, George Zimmerman was arrested and acquitted
- The U.S. Senate passed a budget (first time in four years)
- President Barack Obama won re-election
- Detroit Filed for Bankruptcy
- Casey Anthony was acquitted
- The Miami Cannibal hit the news
- The NBA solved it's lockout
- The NHL ended it's lockout
- The Miami Hurricanes have played two seasons and are two weeks from the start of a third
Those are just a few of the things that have happened in the interim between the first report from Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson and Monday, and the NCAA still hasn't released its report.
The NCAA Committee on Infractions has given no indication when it might release its report and sanctions, if there are any, against the University of Miami. Monday marked ten weeks since the school went before the COI to plead its case.
The NCAA will give 24 hours notice before it releases the public report and sanctions.
