UM Adds Big Wisconsin DE Transfer
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The University of Miami will pick up some much-needed depth and experience along the defensive line this season in the form of former Wisconsin defensive end David Gilbert.
The former Badger went to high school in Broward County before heading to Wisconsin. He's graduated, but has one season of eligibility remaining if he goes to graduate school. That means he eligible to play immediately for Al Golden's Hurricanes squad.
Gilbert started 13 games last year and had 42 tackles, 9.5 for loss, four sacks, and three forced fumbles on the way to being an honorable mention on the All Big 10 team. Through his career, Gilbert played in 43 games in Madison including 17 starts.
The downside to Gilbert is that he's battled foot injuries the last several years.
Gilbert missed most of the 2011 season thanks to a broken right foot and it was announced that he'd miss spring practice this year after he needed surgery to repair ligament damage in the same foot. That was soon followed by Gilbert's announcement he was leaving football.
