UK Transplants To S. Fla. Watching Royal Baby News
SUNRISE (CBS4) -- As the pints were poured and the fish and chips were eaten at the Kingshead Pub in Sunrise, the talk was about Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge's, new baby boy -- with typical British understatement.
"It's the royals having a baby," said one woman. "It's normal."
In fact, many at the Pub believe Americans get more excited about the royal births and nuptials than the British.
"I think the Americans tend to view these things a little more than we do because they haven't a monarchy themselves so they enjoy watching this sort of thing from the UK," said Mary, who's lived in the United States for more than a decade.
As the crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace awaiting official word of the birth, some here at the Pub saw the monarchy in terms of dollars and cents.
"It's a great tourist attraction," said Dominic Ward. "I think London has had a lot of money come in from foreign tourists over the years."
Others see the royals entering a new age of openness and inclusion with William and Kate and their new addition.
"I think they need to be more -- and I think William and Kate are -- aware of how normal people live because they have lived like normal people at university. I think that's a good thing," said Mary.
On many peoples minds at the moment -- Princess Diana, William's mother, who didn't live long enough to see her grandchildren.
"She was loved," said Ward. "She was loved by everybody in England, so it's the grandchild of Princess Diana. It makes it a little bit more special in that regard especially since her death."
