UF Fraternity Suspended For Hazing
GAINESVILLE (CBSMiami/AP) — A University of Florida fraternity has been suspended for hazing and is under investigation by campus police.
University spokeswoman Janine Sikes said Alpha Phi Alpha was suspended after a student suffered injuries in what officials said was "serious physical hazing" off campus over the weekend.
It happened just days after a new anti-hazing task force at UF convened for the first time, according to Sikes.
UF President Bernie Machen sent a letter to all students Tuesday, saying that the school will not tolerate hazing.
Students proved guilty of hazing could face expulsion and criminal charges, Machen said in his statement.
The recent incident at UF happened three months after a Florida A&M University student band member died in what police said was a hazing incident.
