UCF And Others Join Expanding Big East Conference
NEW YORK (CBSMiami.com) – If you like to travel, it might be time to look for a job with the University of Central Florida.
UCF was one of five schools that have accepted a bid to join the Big East Conference starting in 2013, according to cbssports.com.
The other schools invited to the Big East include: Boise State University, San Diego State, Houston, and Southern Methodist University.
The official announcement is expected at some point on Wednesday.
With the addition of those five schools, minus the departures of West Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse, the Big East will have 10 football playing members.
The conference hopes to add Air Force and Navy to the roster to get to 12 members.
The crux of the move was to try and salvage an automatic bid to the Bowl Championship Series.
The Big East has for the last several years put forth some of the worst teams in the BCS, including this year with West Virginia representing the conference in the 2012 Orange Bowl.
The biggest problem facing the Big East now is the potential legal fight with West Virginia, who is seeking to join the Big XII next season. The Big East is seeking to force West Virginia to honor a 27-month exit requirement.
The conference's addition of Boise State and San Diego State essentially make the Big East name worthless.
A team like UCF now face the real possibility of traveling from Orlando to Boise one week and from Orlando to San Diego State the next.
